(I am in an eighth grade geography class when a picture of Antarctica comes up in one of the questions. The person sitting next to me states that this is not, in fact, Antarctica. The following exchange takes place.)
Me: “So what is it, then?”
Student: “Australia.”
Me: *opens atlas and bring up picture of Antarctica* “See? Antarctica. Exact same shape as in the question.”
Student: *brings out atlas and flips to the world map* “See, it’s shaped all skinny and long!”
(I then proceeded to explain how map distortion works, which, ironically, was today’s lesson!)
