Pay With Money Or Your Identity; Your Choice

I’m working the register. A guy walks up and says:

Customer: “I would like a medium drink…”

I automatically pulled the appropriate cup from the stack and placed it in front of him.

Customer: “…and ten burritos for free.”

Me: *Taken aback.* “Uh… you have to pay for food.”

Customer: “Last time I was here, I got ten fried burritos and got food poisoning. This is unacceptable, so I want replacements.”

I thought, “That’s odd, why would you want more food from the place you got food poisoning from?” But we had a policy around giving out food for complaints, so I ask:

Me: “Did you call the store afterward to register the complaint?”

Customer: “No.”

Since he had not, I ducked into the back to ask the manager for approval for the free food. A minute later, I popped back to the register and told the customer:

Me: “I need your name and phone number to record the free food.”

Without warning, he hurled the cup at me… which donked ineffectually off me since it was empty. He then stormed out of the store without another word.
