Opening Up The Blood-Gates

Working | July 3, 2017

(I used to work at a college that had boarding options for families. After the family left the unit, the cleaning and maintenance group would go through and make sure it was as good as new for the next occupant. The family that lived in this unit had five kids, two under the age of three. There was a flight of stairs in the unit and the family had placed a baby gate at the top and bottom of the stairs. They had lived in the unit for four years. The gates had left some marks on the wall.)

Maintenance Guy: *staring at the marks* “I don’t understand why these people feel the need to put up these gates! It’s just another thing for me to fix!”

Me: “You know what’s worse than getting marks out of the walls?”

Maintenance Guy: “What?”

Me: “Blood.”

(He muttered and walked away. He never mentioned it in my hearing again.)
