Only Mostly Insulted

I work in a small-ish novelty store that sells a bit of everything, from geeky merch, movies, little gifts, and gift wrap, etc.

A group of young customers is whispering among themselves, having a debate about something. Finally, egged on by the others, one of them approaches me and says:

Customer: “If I said to you to never get involved in a land war in Asia…”

Me: “I would say that you shouldn’t fall victim to that classic blunder, which is only slightly more well known as…”

Customer & Me: *Simultaneously.* “…Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.”

There’s a small moment of quiet between the group and me, before the customer looks back to the group and gives a thumbs up.

Customer: “Told you he’d know it!”

The group laughs and jeers.

Me: “I looked like I’d know The Princess Bride and all its famous quotes from memory, do I?”

Customer: “Yeah, my friends said you gave off the same vibe as I do. I don’t go out much, and I don’t care about how badly I dress, so… anyway. Thanks!”

They walked away, and I stood there wondering if I should feel complimented or insulted. But hey, at least I’m not unemployed in Greenland…
