A customer walks up holding four large tins of cat food that are heavily discounted.
Customer: “These are on sale, right?”
Me: “Yes!”
Customer: “Perfect. My dog will eat anything.”
Me: “Just to clarify, you’re buying these for a dog?”
Customer: “Yeah, why?”
Me: “Cat food isn’t safe for dogs long-term. It’s not balanced for them; too much fat, and it’s missing vital nutrients.”
Customer: *Defensive.* “He’s a Labrador. He eats worse out of the bin. He’ll be fine.”
Me: “I’m sorry, but I can’t knowingly sell these for a dog’s diet. It’s against store policy.”
Customer: *Raising his voice.* “What is this, a vet’s office? Just ring it up. I’m not asking for your opinion!”
Manager: *Walking over.* “Sir, if you want to feed your dog something that could make him sick, you’ll have to do it somewhere that doesn’t care.”
Customer: “Excuse me?!”
Manager: “We’d rather lose a sale than see your dog lose a kidney. If your standard is ‘he’s eaten worse,’ that’s not a reason, that’s a red flag. We won’t be selling to you, today.”
