Oh, Well, As Long As He’s Always Been Like That…
A coworker and I are checking people out when I see a man, who I know from experience is — to put it mildly — a big grump, getting into her line. I go on my break, but afterward, I ask her about him.
Me: “Do you remember the older man who came through your line before I went on my break?”
Coworker: “Yeah, he came through my line with his wife.”
Me: “I was wondering if anything happened when he checked out since he’s not nice. I saw him at a library I go to; he made the librarian cry! And he walked out of here in a huff once when I asked him for his birth date to buy spray paint.”
Coworker: “Get this. A guy before him left his wallet in the car and then got back in line. While I was getting something for another customer, the grumpy guy got mad at the guy who left the wallet and told him he wanted to fight him and asked him to take it outside.”
I think that is the end of the story, but a while later the grumpy guy calls the store and says he is upset at the coworker for her role in it. She is nervous she’ll get in trouble. We both clock out at the same time and run into our boss.
Coworker: “I’m not going to get into trouble because of that customer, am I?”
Boss: “No, I’ve been trying to customer service that guy for thirteen years and he’s always been like that. You’re not in trouble.”
