Oh, Captain, My Captain!

I’m a paraeducator at a high school, and I openly use they/them pronouns. While helping in a class one day, I have this exchange with a student.

Student: “Thank you, sir!”

Suddenly, the student’s face screws up in consternation.

Student: “Actually, what should we call you?”

Before I can tell the student that I’m okay, with “sir”, they snap their fingers.

Student: “I’ve got it! Thank you, Captain!”

Since then, that student continues to call me “Captain”, and it’s begun to spread among others, as well! Really warmed my heart to have someone be so considerate of me.
