Not So Closed Minded, Part 56
I’m in the back office of the bar. The side door is unlocked, but closed, for deliveries.
I hear a kerfuffle in the main bar and go out to investigate. Half a dozen people are scattered around, pressing buttons on the obviously switched-off jukebox and pinball machines, trying to make them turn on.
Me: “Can I help you?”
Customer: “Uh, yeah. Can we get some drinks? Are you open?”
I make a very pointed, slow sweep of the unlit bar, the stacked stools, the covered bottles, and finally the clock.
Me: “No.”
Customer: “You must be open. I was here around this time recently, and you were open then.”
Me: “Oh, you’re right. On Wednesdays, we make people sneak in through the delivery door and pull down their own stools. If nobody comes in, they just stay stacked until Thursday.”
Customer: “Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
He begins ordering. I laugh.
Me: “In the ten years I’ve worked here, we have never opened before noon, and we won’t be starting today. Please come back during our posted hours.”
Customer: “But you just said—”
Me: “—read the room! The obviously very-closed-and-not-accepting-customers-right-now room!”
Maybe I shouldn’t have been sarcastic, but I was expecting at least some critical thinking skills…
