Not Shrimping Back On Your Order

| Working | December 13, 2016

(I am at a restaurant with my six-year-old daughter. My daughter isn’t interested in anything on the children’s menu so I let her order from mine.)

Waiter: “What will you be having today?”

Me: “I would like the fettuccine Alfredo.”

Daughter: “I’ll have the shrimp jambalaya.”

Waiter: “What would your daughter be having?”

Me: “The shrimp jambalaya.”

Waiter: “She has to have something from the children’s menu.”

Me: “It’s okay with me. She doesn’t have to finish it.”

Waiter: “I’ll give you some more time to decide.”

(Ten minutes pass.)

Waiter: “Have you decided what to order for your daughter?”

Daughter: “Shrimp jambalaya, please.”

Waiter: *to daughter* “You won’t like that. It’s very spicy.”

Daughter: “I like spicy.”

Waiter: *to daughter* “You can’t have that. It’s for grownups; pick something else.”

Me: “She can have whatever she wants.”

Waiter: “Fine, your food will be ready soon.”

(The waiter came back with my fettuccine and a plate of fish sticks. I have taken my daughter to this restaurant before and never had any problems with letting her order from the adult menu. I ate half my pasta and gave the rest to my daughter. I didn’t tip the waiter and complained to the manager. The manager refunded the entire meal, fired the waiter on the spot, and gave my daughter a container of shrimp jambalaya to take home.)
