Not Acting Childish

(I am a single woman in my mid-thirties. My parents are incredibly laid back and have never expressed any desire for me to get married or give them grandchildren; however, my mother’s best friend has recently become a grandmother.)

Mom: *out of the blue during a phone call with me* “I don’t know why, but I always pictured that she and I would become grandparents at the same time.” *pause* “I don’t suppose there is much chance of that happening now, is there? ”

Me: “I am currently single, not wearing pants, just had a long conversation with my cat, and took my birth control with beer.”

Mom: “Yeah… Righty ho, then.”

(And that was the last time she mentioned that.)
