No Cheese – Two Words That Would Make Most People Very Sad

(We have a regular customer who comes in once a week and orders food after purchasing the same thing every time, at more or less the same exact time, the same day of the week. He’s usually very polite, but talks in almost a whisper and almost never talks in a full sentence. On this day he comes up to me after making his purchases to order food.)

Customer: *almost inaudible* “Cheese… Cheese. Cheese.”

Me: “One cheese slice? Anything else, sir?”

Customer: *becoming agitated* “No… cheese. Cheese.”

(He is looking uncomfortable and upset rather than actually angry by this point. Since I’m used to him speaking vaguely, I decide to just be patient.)

Me: “I’m sorry, sir. Please, what do you want? Can you point at it?”

Customer: *frowning, pointing, and speaking clearly and directly* “CHEESE.”

(I turn around. He’s pointing at a large bag of cheese that we use on the pizzas.)

Me: *blinks* “You… want just the bag of cheese?”

Customer: *nods emphatically, looking excited*

Me: “I’m… sorry, sir. We can’t just give you a bag of cheese from here… You can buy them in the dairy section.”

Customer: *looks downcast* “No cheese.”

(He left looking very dejected without buying any food. I later found out that we were out of the bags of cheese at that time, which was even stranger, considering he never bought any bags of cheese normally.)
