Needs To Be Tutored In The Art Of Giving A D*mn

, , , , , | Learning | June 12, 2017

(I work as a freelance math tutor. One day, I meet my client for an appointment and have the following exchange:)

Me: “I see you’re going to [Local Community College]. Which class are you taking?”

Student: “I don’t know.”

Me: *assuming maybe he forgot the name of the class* “Ok, do you have the book?”

Student: “No.”

Me: “Well then, do you happen to have the syllabus?”

Student: “No.”

Me: “Then why did you set up this appointment?”

Student: “No, that was my uncle.”

(I just left at that point.)

I hope you still billed the uncle for wasting your time.

In fairness, the uncle is trying to help the student, not realizing the student himself is the problem.

Of course, the uncle himself isn’t the problem. His lazy slob of a nephew is. But someone’s gotta pay that bill. It’s up to the uncle to make his nephew pay him back.

I read this and wondered if the OP misunderstood, and it was the uncle who needed the math tutor…

but if the uncle needed the math tutor, then why did he send is niece/nephew instead of going himself?

Since it was the tutor that left after the exchange I thought he was making a housecall. That still doesn’t explain where the uncle was and if it was the uncle or this guy who was the actual student.

Well according to the location in the story, this takes place in the library, not at the person’s house.

I keep forgetting to the check the tags and miss details like that. That does make it less likely that the uncle needed the tutor.

I used to work in an FE college. You would not believe the amount of 16 year olds whose parents enrolled them and they have no idea what course they’re on. Also, when they come in they suddenly lose the ability to speak and their mothers do the talking while they stand back, in the shadows and hanging over the edge of oblivion.
