A Model Piece Of Motivation

, , , , | Right | September 11, 2017

(A model and actress has designed a line of clothing for our store and, as such, there are posters of her around the store, including one very big one of her in her underwear near the lingerie aisle. I’m in the food hall, nowhere near this poster, when an older man approaches me.)

Customer: *with a slightly creepy smile* “Hello.”

Me: “Hello.” *pause* “Can I help you at all?”

Customer: “Yes. You have a big poster of a lady over in your clothing section. I’d like to buy it.”

Me: “Um, I’m not sure if that’s possible. I can check?”

Customer: “Please.”

(I call the manager and explain the situation. She comes down and deals with the customer while I resume my job. Afterwards, the man walks off, and the manager heads to the lift area where she bursts out laughing.)

Me: “So, what did you say?”

Manager: “He offered me £20 for it. I said it would be up for a couple of months and he gave me his number and told me to text him so he could come in.”

Me: “What did he want it for, or do I not want to know?”

Manager: “He runs a gym, and wanted to put it on the wall to ‘motivate’ his clients…”

(The funniest thing? Another man came in later the same day, also wanting to buy the poster! He was told it had already been “sold”…)

    *cough**cough*… Of course, to a gym… *cough*

Honestly, the last thing I would want while on the treadmill would be a nursing a semi.

      That’s why it’s a motivator.

You either find non-gym ways to keep in shape, or you push yourself harder while working out so you don’t need to spend as much time with the equipment.

Maybe he owns a Curves franchise or another gym geared towards women, and he’s giving them an ideal to shoot for.

  • CyNical CyNthia

    That actually makes sense…

“Get into good physical shape and you’ll be banging chicks like her!”

    or something like that.

  • AussieEevee

If he runs a gym, surely he can afford to hire an actress to pose for promotional photos…

    • Rob Tonka

You think people become rich by spending money just because they can afford it?

    • Lany Chabot-Laroche

      1. He probably doesn’t own a gym.
      2. He probably wants a cutout of that exact actress, not just a random model.
      3. As Rob said, it’s not because you can afford something that you should not try to find cheaper deals.

Motivation to chase after girls like that… hopefully not

Apparently someone my parents knew went to an Elf petrol station and there was a cardboard cut-out of an actor his wife liked, so he asked if he could have it. The manager told him that he could, once the promotion was over, so he gave the manager his phone number.

A few months later, he came back to an answering machine message beginning with “Hello, this is the Bryanston Elf…”

Except that the model/actress and the photographer didn’t release the photo to be used to promote his gym or be used as motivation in his gym. It’s probably getting into grey areas on copyright laws to sell it to someone for personal use without it being released as “for sale”, much less to sell it to someone else for use in a different business not at all affiliated with the person.

However the liscense on the poster probably expires after the promotion as well. Ive seen numerous places do similar things

      • Gnomer Denois

If the license expires, they aren’t at liberty to sell it at all, ownership reverts to the model/actress’s clothing brand most likely.

        • steeledminer616

Eh… depends. I have seen a lot of places sell th advertisements of various products once the promotion is over, mostly cause they otherwise have to throw it out.

          • Gnomer Denois

Lots of places doing it doesn’t make it technically legal.

  • AKchic

Well… one arm would be getting a workout…

We had a big Katy perry cut out a few years ago that a dude wanted to buy for his grandson, or so he said.
