Minimum-Sized Customers Are No Match For Minimum-Waged Workers

Back when I was still working retail, we had a customer come in with her young child. The boy was probably about four years old, if that, and I am pretty certain he hadn’t been parented nor been told ‘no’ a single day of those years.

The entire time the mom spent shopping, I spent running after the kid and pulling him out of displays, keeping him from actively destroying merchandise, as well as stopping him from running out into the busy street and getting himself killed. When the mom is finally done after about half an hour, and FINALLY holds her son’s hand so he won’t run off again, the kid is glaring daggers at me for spoiling his ‘fun’.

Boy: *Glaring and pouting at me.* “I don’t like you. You’re mean and ugly.”

Me: *Looking first at his mom, then at him when she doesn’t discipline him for his rudeness.* “The feeling is mutual. For the very same reasons. But unlike you, I got paid for being a b**** for the last thirty minutes.”

He looked somewhere between stunned and ready to cry. His mom didn’t say anything the entire time. Do I feel bad for insulting a kid? Not at all. Here’s to hoping he learned something that day.
