I am eight years old. I am also a geeky kid who reads a lot. A few months ago, my family bought our first hamster.

Me: “It says here that ‘hamster’ is from the German ‘hamstern’, meaning ‘to hoard’.”

My parents make noises acknowledging that the kid has said something.

Later that week:

Dad: “‘Hamster’, from the German ‘hamper’, meaning ‘wicker basket.’”

Me: “Very funny.”

Dad: “Isn’t that what you said?”

Me: “…”
