Making Pour Choices

My coworker is on the checkout, thirty weeks pregnant, scanning as quickly as possible. A customer is impatiently piling her groceries onto the belt like they’re a Jenga tower. After another item haphazardly placed on the belt falls to the ground:

Coworker: “Ma’am, could you slow down just a bit? If things get too packed at the end of the belt, they can—”

Before she can finish, a bottle of red wine rolls right off the end and smashes against the floor. The splash is spectacular, painting her shoes, pants, and even her bump in burgundy.

Me: “…fall.”

Customer: *Glaring at her.* “Well, it’s not my fault that you can’t ring my order up faster! Now hurry up and page somebody to bring me another bottle of wine!”
