A Literal Generation Gap

(My husband and I are in our forties and childless, mostly due to my health issues. But we do have two goddaughters, the elder of whom is in her mid-twenties and married. Very early in 2017, she contacts us with the news that after a few years of trying, she and her husband are expecting a baby. I am so excited I almost start weeping. An hour later, I go to work; I have only five coworkers and we’re all very tight-knit, so I’m eager to share this news.)

Coworker: “[My Name], look at you! You’re practically glowing! What’s happened?”

Me: *blurts without thinking* “I’m going to be a grandmother!”

Coworker: *pauses* “Honey, I think you skipped a step.”

(Once I managed to clarify the situation, they were thrilled for us all! The baby is due in the fall and we’re looking forward to meeting our “grand-godchild.”)
