Listen To The Skin-Tone Of My Voice

, , , | Right | July 9, 2021

I have a mixed accent because I moved around a lot as a kid, so I have a mish-mash of different dialects. I am white and British.

I’m working at a call centre and I greet this woman caller.

Caller: “No, I wan’t to speak to somebody British and white, that clearly isn’t you.”

I think about arguing with her but then have a different idea. I pass her through to my colleague, Al. He takes over the call and deals with her query and the woman seems happy.

‘Al’ isn’t short for ‘Alan.’ Al and his family were from Jordan. Al was short for ‘Aalhad’ (Not his real name but his real name had a similar shortening). He finishes the call:

Coworker: “Thank you, madam, you have been speaking to Aalhad Ahmed, have a great day.”

The woman called back to complain that we had tricked her and was screaming about foreigners stealing all the jobs and whatnot.
