I work at a movie theater. We have a group text/chat group between all our coworkers for shift swaps and sharing schedules, etc. We have this one coworker who seems to need to call out every week.

Coworker: “Hey, my grandpa’s brother died, and the funeral is Saturday. Can anyone cover my four-to-ten shift?”

The next week:

Coworker: “So, my uncle got some bad news over the week, and we thought we’d all come together as a family to be with him. Anyone free to cover my Saturday shift from four to ten? I might need Sunday covered, too.”

The next week:

Coworker: “I need someone to cover my Saturday four-to-ten. My mother’s bestie just passed away, and we all need to be there for her.”

The next week:

Coworker: “Hey, I can’t work my Saturday four-to-ten.”

Other Coworker: “Who died?”

Coworker: “A family friend. How did you know?”

The next week:

Coworker: “Hey guys, I need someone to cover my Saturday.”

Other Coworker: “Jesus, dude. At this point, quit, or we’re gonna start an investigation to see if you’re actually killing family members to not work Saturdays!”

They quit a couple of weekends later stating that it was a “toxic work environment”.
