(In my freshman history class, a student known for not being the sharpest tool in the shed has sparked a class-wide discussion about the upcoming Presidents Day.)

Student: “There’s one president for every hour in the day.”

(I turn around in my seat to look him in the eyes.)

Me: “How many hours are in a day, [Student]?”

Student: *without missing a beat* “Forty-eight!”

(The entire class heard the exchange and explodes into laughter.)

Student: “Wait, wait, no, [My Name]! I didn’t mean—”

Teacher: “And this is why [Student] is banned from asking any more questions this week.”
