Laptop Flop, Part 40
Around the early 2000s, I am helping a customer look at our computers.
Customer: “What’s this big box next to this TV for?”
Me: “That’s not a TV, it’s a monitor for a computer, and that big box is the actual computer.”
Customer: “But I don’t need that box, right? It’s big and ugly.”
Me: “I’m afraid that without that box the monitor is useless, it won’t display anything.”
Customer: “But it’s a computer.” *Points at the monitor.*
Me: “No, that’s the computer.” *Points at the box.*
Customer: “But it’s so big and ugly!”
Me: “Would you like to see our computer options that have the… uh… big ugly box built into the screen?”
Customer: “Yeah!”
I show them our laptops.
Customer: “Those still have big ugly boxes at the bottom!”
Me: “Sir, that’s called a keyboard.”
Customer: “I don’t want any of those either!”
Me: “Sir, I really don’t think a computer is for you.”
Customer: “Yeah it’s all so confusing. I’ll just stick to reading the internet in the newspaper.”
