Laid It On Real Thick

(I’m an English major, and a very geeky one at that. As such, I sometimes muse over common terms and what they actually mean or where they came from.)

Me: “Hmmm… you know the term ‘getting laid’?”

Boyfriend: “I’m familiar, yes.”

Me: “I wonder where that comes from? Because when I think about it, I know that in the Bible, when they reference sex, they call it “lying with” someone. “Lie with me”, “and he laid with her”, you know? I haven’t looked it up or anything, but what if that’s where the term comes from?”

Boyfriend: “I’m going to say something that’s going to make you groan, but you’re also going to love it. I would just like to make it clear that this is YOUR fault.”

Me: *overdramatically bracing myself, mock dramatic tone of voice* “Okay… what is it?”

Boyfriend: *in the deepest voice he can manage* “Baby… let’s get biblical!”
