Keeps Coming Up Like A Dirty Penny

Learning | January 16, 2016

(I work in the elementary room of a Montessori school. I am playing the money game with a first grader. One of the quarters in the game is very dirty.)

Student: “Why is this quarter so dirty?”

Me: “It’s dirty because it’s old, and old things are often dirty. It’s from 1972. Which is really cool because that means there’s history attached to it. Just think: Richard Nixon may have used this quarter.”

Student: “Who is Richard Nixon?”

Me: “An old president.”

Student: “Oh. If he’s an old president then is he a dirty president?”

Me: “…Yes. Yes, he was.”
