It’s Only Illegal If You Write It Down, Right? …Right?

I’m working at a retail store that is pushing for customers to sign up to receive coupons via email.

Manager: “You need to be asking every customer if they would like to sign up for emails. If they say they have already done so or if they do not have a computer, tell them they can sign up a friend.”

Me: “Isn’t that all kinds of illegal?”

Manager: “I’m sure it’s fine.”

Me: “Can I get that request in writing?”

Manager: “No.”

Me: “Not so sure now, are you?”
