It’s All Fun And Games Until It Isn’t.

(A friend of a friend starts hanging out with the group. She is nice enough, however very immature. Whilst I appreciate someone in their late twenties liking cartoons or Pokémon, for it to be the only thing they go on about gets old fast. Nevertheless I try to be friendly and strike up conversation.)

Me: “So, what do you do for a living?”

Woman: “Oh, I work for [Games Company].”

Me: “Really? That’s really cool. So you get involved with making of games like [Really Popular Game]?”

Woman: “I did actually! It was so much fun. What do you do?”

Me: “Oh, I’m an engineer. I work in the automotive industry.”

Woman: “Hmm, that sounds boring.”

Me: “Oh, I, er, yeah, I guess you can say that. But it can be interesting, fixing problems, working with new…”

(I stop talking as she clearly isn’t listening, or at this point looking at me.)

Woman: *almost to herself* “I’d hate to have a boring job; mine is so much fun.”

Me: “Yeah… I guess.”

Woman: “I know, why don’t you apply to work for [Games Company]? They are looking for junior testers.”

Me: “Thanks, but I actually like my job,.I spent five years studying and training. Plus I don’t think the pay will be what I would like.”

Woman: *seemingly ignoring me* “Oh, it’s not hard. I spent last week shooting at walls to make sure they sound the same.”

Me: “Really, I’m fine, thanks.”

Woman: “Suit yourself. I was just trying to get you a better job.”

(For the record, my boring job turned into a promotion, then another. I’m running my side of a business, whereas she is still shooting walls.)
