It Is Time To Update Life

, , , , , | Working | December 17, 2025

I’ve been called to assist an office manager with a “computer issue.” I say “computer issue” because that’s how he always describes his issues. He never provides any more details. When I’ve tried:

Me: “Okay, before I come over there, can you describe the issue?”

Office Manager: “Oh, just a computer issue. You’ll figure it out when you get here.”

Me: “Just a simple description will help. Is it running slower? Is it related to a particular program?”

Office Manager: “It’s a computer issue.”

I sigh and head over to him on the other side of the office complex.

I get there, and I can’t believe what I am seeing.

Me: “It’s asking you to update your password.”

Office Manager: “What does that mean?”

Me: “It means you need to update your password.”

Office Manager: “How do I do that?”

Me: “You see the button where it says ‘update password’?”

Office Manager: “Yeah?”

Me: “Press that.”

Office Manager: “Okay, now what?”

Me: “You see where it says enter old password?”

Office Manager: “Yeah?”

Me: “Enter it.”

Office Manager: “I don’t know it.”

Me: “Well, I won’t know it. You need to remember your passwords.”

Office Manager: “Oh, well, I’m not a computer person.”

Me: “I’m not a computer person either. I’m a human being who is capable of remembering things and reading.”

The office manager suddenly picked up on my tone and called over the department manager to complain about me.

Department Manager: “Jesus Christ, [Office Manager], it’s 2025! This office has had computers for almost forty years! You are not allowed to not be “a computer person” anymore! You work here, you’re a computer person! If you want to live in the past, go get a job at a Renaissance fair!”

I helped him reset his password, and he suddenly stopped calling me for every tiny “computer issue.”
