In Line And Out Of Line, Part 28

, , , , | Right | January 1, 2025

It is New Year’s Day. For some unknown reason, we get SLAMMED; endless lines, customers needing help on the floor constantly, etc.

A customer in my checkout lane runs into someone she knows the next line over. I can hear them talking as I am ringing the customers ahead of her. I finally get to her, but she doesn’t move as she’s so wrapped up in her conversation; she doesn’t even acknowledge it’s her turn. Other customers are looking back and forth at them.

My attempts to get her attention are ignored, and I can’t just take the customer behind her as our lanes are narrow, so I walk out and grab her cart and start unloading. A minute later she takes the two steps forward and I say hello to be polite. She and her friend are still lost in conversation so she either doesn’t hear me or ignores me, whatever. Other people are still looking back and forth between them with a “seriously?” look on their faces.

I notice that she is holding reusable bags. Since I have already started bagging her stuff in paper and I think: “Well, it wasn’t important enough for her to pause her conversation for two seconds and tell me, so too bad, she gets our bags now.”

I finally finish:

Me: “Your total is [total].”

Customer: *Confused.* “What?”

Me: “Your total is [total].”

She puts her card in and returns to talking. She’s so oblivious that she doesn’t hear the card reader going off telling her to remove her card.

Me: “Please remove your card, ma’am.”

Customer: “Oh…”

She finally puts her bagged groceries in her cart, and I give her the receipt. At this point, I assume she will move.

Nope.

She stands there and keeps talking to her friend getting in the next customer’s way. Then her friend finishes and they stand in the walkway talking, getting in everyone else’s way.

Someone later told me two people were blocking the door.
