If They Can’t Make Change Then Change Your Attitude

, , , | Right | August 22, 2021

It’s 5:37 in the morning and we have been open for all of seven minutes. A few of my regulars are in, have gotten their coffee/food, and are seated when in walks this older guy who tries to buy food with a 100$ bill. Like most fast food places we don’t keep a bunch of twenty’s in our safe or registers, which of course means that we normally can’t break any large bills until we’ve been open for a while.

Me: “I’m sorry, sir, we can’t take 100$ bills this early. You’ll have to use smaller bills or use a card.”

He throws a full-on tantrum, yelling and cussing me out.

Customer: “How dare you not take my money, you f****** idiot!”

Me: “Sir, you can go to the grocery store, and get change from them.”

He won’t stop yelling so I finally tell him:

Me: “Sir, there’s nothing I can do. If you’re going to carry on like that then you need to leave because you’re disturbing the other customers.”

Customer: *Yelling louder.* “No! What are you going to do about it?”

Fortunately, one of my regular customers steps up, gets in his face, and tells him:

Regular: “If you don’t leave right now the cops will be called and/or I’m going to physically throw you out.”

Apparently, while it was ok to berate a twenty-something girl the jerk customer quickly backed down in the face of a man bigger than him, and he quickly left, but still cussing and yelling.
