I Can’t Make This Any More Plane

| London, England, UK | Working | June 2, 2013

(I’m at the airport with my wife’s family, sorting out assistance for her disabled father. I’m English but he only speaks Chinese, and he has no legs from the thigh down. He’s sitting in a wheelchair in plain view of a staff member.)

Staff Member: “I’m afraid we can’t get him a seat right at the front of the plane, but we can do one a few rows back. Can he walk a few rows back?'”

Me: “Err, sorry?”

Staff Member: “Can he just take a few steps down the plane to a seat?’

(The staff member says this slowly and patronisingly, while making a ‘walking fingers’ gesture with her hands.)

Me: “Not easily, no!”
