I Am Stupid The Third

(I work at an information center for a college. Because we are in the very flat state of Florida, basements and sub-levels are very uncommon. My information desk is obviously on the ground floor of a three-story building with nothing that would indicate otherwise. A student approaches.)

Student: “Hi. Can you tell me where my class is?”

Me: “Sure, I can help with that. Do you know the room number or the professor’s name?”

Student: “I know my name.”

Me: “That’s… really great… but unfortunately, that doesn’t help me figure out what class you registered for. Do you have any information at all about the class?”

Student: “It’s [course code].”

Me: “Ah, perfect. That’s taking place in Room 304.”

Student: “Where is 304?”

Me: “On the third floor.”

Student: “Is that going to be upstairs or downstairs?”

Me: *looks up to the ceiling three stories above me* “Definitely upstairs.”

(In hindsight, I should have let him figure that one out on his own. After all, critical thinking is an important part of college.)
