How Was He Not Fired Waaaaay Before This?!

I joined an automotive shop as an assistant manager. We had a tech who lost his license due to a DUI — in a customer’s car! I don’t know how he wasn’t fired for that as it happened before I started, but some kind of deal was struck with the owner.

[Tech] ended up getting a place across a field from the shop. It rained really hard one night, so the next day, we all gathered to watch him cross the field that was now a swamp.

As he walked out his back door, we noticed him stumble. We all figured it was a slippery step. Then, we noticed that he was carrying his boots and wearing only socks. As he got halfway through the field, he slipped again, this time falling flat on his back in the mud. He got up and continued his trek. As he reached the parking lot, his stumbling didn’t stop. Yup… this man was drunk.

Once inside, [Tech] decided that the customer waiting room was the best spot to put on his boots — over his wet, muddy socks. He sat down, lifted one foot onto the table, and puked. Without missing a beat, he started to put his boot on. As he leaned forward, he passed out flat on the table.

We sent him home, still drunk.

He returned later to find out that he had been fired. His first question:

Tech: “Why? Because I’m late?”

He didn’t even remember what had happened that morning.
