How To Hook(up) Readers

(I’ve been very into anime and manga lately. I am on a drive to the city with my mom. I’m explaining to her the plot of one of my favorites. The two main characters in it, although both being boys, are commonly paired up in a romantic way. I really like the pairing, but my mom is against homosexuality, so I don’t bring it up.)

Me: “So, that’s basically it.”

Mom: “Sounds pretty cool. I was waiting for [Character #1] and [Character #2] to get together.”

Me: “What do you mean by that?”

Mom: “Like, hook up.”

Me: “…a lot of people were, mom.”
