How Frequently Does He Scam People That He Didn’t Remember This?!

I hired an employee for a restaurant I was playing a part in opening. The first day the staff was beginning to train, the opening got pushed back by a few days. [Employee] asked me if he could borrow $100 until the next week when work would resume and the first checks would come in. He was a skilled guy, and I didn’t want to lose him, so I loaned him the money out of my pocket.

A few days later, when the staff was meant to return to work for the opening, [Employee] didn’t show up, and his phone was disconnected. We never heard from him again.

Cut to a couple of years later. The restaurant had been a success, and we were preparing to open a second location a few miles away. I was going through resumes to staff the new location when, lo and behold, [Employee]’s resume showed up in my email. I reached out to him to arrange an interview the next morning, as early as possible, to which he complied. The dude didn’t even remember the name of the restaurant. (It was the same as the first location.)

[Employee] showed up at 7:00 am the next morning and was there waiting for me when I came in. I asked a colleague to keep him waiting, which he did for almost an hour.

I finally sat down with him, and right away, I asked if he had remembered me or the restaurant at all, which he denied. I reminded him that I had lent him $100 almost two years ago.

Employee: “Maybe you met with my twin brother.”

Me: “If you want to give me the money back right here and now, then maybe we can discuss a job.”

He didn’t know what to say; he looked completely flummoxed and just meekly denied remembering the incident. So, he left.

I didn’t get my money back, but I was at least able to humiliate him and waste his entire morning, and that completely made my day.
