Hiding All Responsible Adults

| Working | November 5, 2015

(As a team building exercise, and for new people to get used to the building, my company decided to have a little game of hide and seek with everyone. This is about ten minutes in while I’m in apparently a very good hiding spot.)

Coworker #1: “Okay! I think that’s everyone! Managers, please check that we have everyone from your department.”

Manager: “Hey, wait… Where’s [My Name]?”

Coworker #2: “You know… I don’t think we found him!”

Coworker #1: “WHAT?!? I swear I found him… What’s he look like?”

Manager: “Six foot, Asian, fairly fit.”

Coworker #2: “And great at hiding…. Holy crap, we hired a ninja!”

(General laughter and scampering as they move to find me… Twenty minutes later:)

Coworker #2: “Has ANYONE seen heads or tails of [My Name]?!”

Manager: “No! But he sent me a text saying he can hear everything we say and is silently laughing his head off!”

Coworker #1: “He’s got to be moving! You and you stand on those corners and make sure he doesn’t pop out when everyone is gone! You! Check the ceilings! Someone check outside! We will find him!”

(Yes… they set up sentries… and then covered the whole floor with them. One hour since game start:)

Manager: “Man… do you realize that we’ve just paid everyone an hour to play hide and seek?”

Me: *starts laughing loudly* “Oh, my god! You really did!”

Manager: *running into the room I’m hiding in* “HE’S IN HERE! BUT WHERE?!”

Me: *popping out* “In this box! Ninja rule #1: It’s not about not being seen. It’s about letting people see what they expect!”
