He Was Always A Cat Person; He Just Didn’t Know It
Last November, my husband and I were on our way to dinner, and we stopped at a gas station; [Husband] wanted to get a Coke. I was waiting in the car with my window down, and I heard a faint little meow. At first, I thought I was just hearing things, but then I heard it again. I got out of my car, and I heard the meowing again. I looked around and spotted a tiny orange tabby kitten lying by the side of the store.
Kitty meowed again. I went in for a closer look, and the kitten came straight over to me. I petted her, and she meowed again. I noticed that her eye looked strange like it was infected.
My husband came out of the store, and I called for him to come over and look. My husband is not really a cat person, but he has grown to like my two cats a lot.
He saw the kitty, and I asked him to go back inside the store to buy a can of cat food, which he did. He also asked the store clerk if the kitty belonged to anyone, who said he thought she’d been dumped off there about a week before, but as far as he knew, she didn’t have a home.
We fed the kitty, and she was starving.
I was petting the kitty as she was eating, and I when I looked up, my husband was watching me, smiling.
Husband: “You know, it’s going to be very cold this week. I was thinking, well, maybe… That little kitten could really use a nice warm house where she will be loved.”
He paused for a moment, and then he smiled wider.
Husband: “The kitten also may enjoy having some new friends — you know, like two cats and two dogs.”
Me: *Also smiling* “Does this mean we can take her home?”
Husband: “Of course! I could never leave this little baby out here. Can you run home and get the cat carrier? I will stay here with the kitten.”
Our house was about three miles away. I rushed home, got the carrier, and went back to the store, where my husband was petting the kitty. I put her in the carrier, and we took her home.
The next day, I took her to the vet and was able to get her shots, as well as antibiotics for her bad eye. My husband wanted to name the kitty Butterscotch.
Several months have passed, and Butterscotch is doing amazing. She is a sweetheart and loves her new friends. My husband likes her a lot, too.
