Hay There, It’s An Emergency

Sometime around 2010, my mom called me at work. She usually texts me, but tells me if she ever has to call, it’s urgent. I’m about to go into a meeting, but I took the call.

Me: “Mom, is everything okay?”

Mom: “No! It’s an emergency!”

Me: *Getting worried.* “What happened?!”

Mom: “The power is out!”

My grandma, who lives with us, uses a few machines for health reasons. Not being able to charge these could be a problem.

Me: “Oh! How is the battery on grandma’s [Device]?”

Mom: “What?! Oh, that’s fine! It’s got like, three days! That’s not important! This is about my farm!”

Me: “Your… farm?”

Mom: “My Farmville farm! If I don’t log into my Facebook and water the crops, they’ll all die!”

Me: “Mom… I’m about to go into an important meeting, and you’re calling about an emergency because you can’t log in to your Facebook game?”

Mom: “It is an emergency! I’ve been growing them for three days, and now they’re due for harvest!”

Me: “Mom, I am going into a meeting now. I will come by this afternoon to figure out the power issues.”

Mom: “But my alfalfa!”

Me: “Bye, Mom.” *Click.*

I left work early and drove by, flicked a switch, got the power back, and went home. Mom didn’t say a word to me, obviously devastated.
