Having An ‘X’-istential Crisis

(We are in art class, but we’ve been given time to do our own thing. I’m known as one of those students who gets “just enough wrong to appear human”; another girl in the class has asked for my help in her maths.)

Me: “So, the answer should be .”

(The girl checks the answer in the back of the book.)

Girl: “That’s not it.”

Me: “Really? Ugh… Okay…” *I do some more calculations* “Is it ?”

Girl: “No.”

Me: “Okay, that’s weird. So this is the method I’m using, I just—“

Girl: *surprised* “OH! You’re not using that value of ‘x’, are you?”

Me: “Why?”

Girl: “I just wrote that down because I thought it might be better if ‘x’ had a different value.”

Me: “You WHAT?!”

(I got it right the first try, once I was given the right question.)
