Have You Tried Not Being Ableist?

Our boss is upset at a coworker who has made a mistake in a report. I can understand the frustration, but one, the boss is doing this in front of everyone in the office, and two, he says stupid s*** like:

Boss: “Why don’t you just control your ADHD? Just focus on the problem, it’s easy!”

Several people in the office laugh. One coworker says out loud:

Coworker #1: “Why are you homeless? Just buy a house!”

More laughter. More joining in.

Coworker #2: “Got anxiety? Have you just tried worrying less?”

Coworker #3: “Can’t sleep? Have you tried falling asleep?”

Boss: “Quiet! This is between me and [ADHD Coworker].”

Coworker #1: “Then do it where all of us can’t hear everything!”

[Boss] scoffs and gives up. [Coworker #1] walks over to [ADHD Coworker] and explains they used to get tripped up on that report too, and helped them figure out how to avoid that mistake in the future. 

That jerk is still our boss, but he’s stopped punishing people for things they can’t help, knowing we’ll all gang up on him if he does.
