Grandma And Grandpa And A Great, Grand, Grueling Adventure

Reading this story made me think of a similar one from my family. My parents and I moved to Connecticut from the UK when I was too young to remember these events firsthand, but I’ve heard the story told many times.

Not long after we arrived, my dad’s parents came to visit. When asked what they wanted to do:

Grandparents: “Can we see the Great Lakes?”

Cue my father explaining that not only were these lakes far away, but most were also bigger than their home country of Wales.

A couple of years down the line, we’d moved to California, and the same grandparents visited again. Reminding them what had happened last time, my dad asked again what they wanted to do.

Grandparents: “San Francisco?”

Dad: “Absolutely.”

Grandparents: “Napa Valley?”

Dad: “Definitely.”

Grandparents: “Monterey?”

Dad: “It’s a longer drive, but we can make a whole day of it.”

Things were looking good, but then…

Grandparents: “Grand Canyon?”

Dad: “Nope.”

To be fair, it’s hard to get a sense of scale, but I heard it put this way: in the US, 100 years is a long time. In Europe, 100 miles is a long way!
