Giving Cold Drinks The Cold Shoulder

(I am a popular coffee shop and order an iced drink. I notice there’s a stack of four plastic cups as well. The barista is just setting them aside. Everyone else in the store is busy but she’s just standing at the espresso machine doing nothing while wearing sunglasses. After a few people who ordered hot drinks after have gotten their drinks, I speak up.)

Me: “Hey, I’m going to be late for work. Other people who have ordered after me have already gotten their drinks. What’s the hold up with mine?”

(All four plastic cups are still sitting there empty.)

Barista: “I don’t know how to make cold drinks.”

(The manager overhears this and turns around.)

Manager: “What’s wrong with you? Why haven’t you made any cold drinks?!”

Barista: “I just said I don’t know how!”

Manager: “I’m taking you off the espresso machine. Go clean the tables.”

(I finally got my drink and they gave me a voucher for a free drink for next time. I haven’t seen that barista since and she never did take her sunglasses off!)
