(Our class is debating if the three-strike law should be removed.)
Student: “Actually, I was thinking of getting rid of it in a bit of a different way.”
Teacher: “Oh?”
Student: “I was thinking that we should change it so that if they get three strikes, they get the death penalty instead of life in jail.”
Teacher: “Wouldn’t that be cruel and unusual punishment?”
Student: “I don’t see a problem with that.”
Teacher: “What about the fact that it violates the Constitution?”
Student: “Well, we can just amend the Constitution.”
Teacher: “What about torture?”
Student: “I don’t see how that has anything to do with it.”
Teacher: “Why is torture banned?”
Me: “Because it’s cruel and unusual punishment.”
Student: “Well, you got to do what you got to do.”
