Getting Owned By The Owner, Part 22
It is a week after I have learned how to use the register at my first job ever.
Customer: “You ran up these mixing bowls wrong.”
Me: “Sorry, ma’am. What should the price be?”
Customer: “Seriously? You have to ask? You’re scanning them individually! They’re all part of a set!”
Me: “I’ve been trained to scan each item with a barcode. If they’re part of a set, the system will recognize it and price them accordingly.”
Customer: “Are you saying I’m wrong? You’re just a stupid, incompetent girl! Get me your manager!”
I am holding back tears, as I am not used to this kind of attitude. I call my manager over, who knows something is up by the shakiness in my voice.
Customer: “You need to either train your staff better or let this one go. They are being—”
My manager voids her transaction and interrupts the customer in one of the scariest voices I’ve ever heard.
Manager: “They are being perfectly polite and doing precisely what they were trained to do. Now it’s time for you to stop terrorizing my employees and get the h*** out of my store.”
Customer: *Shocked* “I’m going to call corporate!”
Manager: “Please do! It will help us identify you so that we can ban you from all of our stores.”
The customer gives a “Well, I never!” gasp and storms out, leaving behind her items.
Me: “Will corporate really ban her?”
Manager: “Probably not, but it’ll make her think twice.”
If she called corporate, neither my manager nor I ever heard about it!
