Generosity Gone Up In Smoke

(I’m waiting for my bus which is due any minute when a homeless man approaches me.)

Man: “Do you have $2 so I can get home?”

Me: “I’m sorry, I don’t have any cash on me right now.”

Man: “Well, could you go into the store behind us and get me a drink, then?”

Me: “I’m sorry. My bus will be here any second.”

Man: “Oh, come on, it’ll only take a minute.”

(I pick up my bags as I see my bus approaching and he takes this to mean I’m going to get him the drink.)

Man: “Actually, could you buy me a packet of cigarettes instead?”

Me: “Uh, no. You pushed your luck too far; I would have considered getting you the drink, but cigarettes? Really?”

Man: “Well, f*** you.”
