I live in an apartment block. One of the neighbors is an older lady with a dog who barks and growls at everyone. He doesn’t launch forward or attack or anything, but he makes it very clear that he doesn’t like anything and anyone.

I’m waiting for the elevator, and when it opens, the woman and her dog are there. The dog immediately starts growling. I start to step into the elevator, and the woman steps forward.

Woman: “What are you doing?!”

Me: “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m using the elevator.”

Woman: “But I’m in here with my dog! He doesn’t like you!”

Me: “Then you’re free to step outside and wait for another one.”

Woman: “Why would I do that?! I was in here first!”

Me: *Stepping in and claiming my spot in the corner of the elevator.* “It’s not first come first serve. It’s an elevator for the entire building.”

We start riding down and all that can be heard is the dog’s growling.

Woman: “He can sense bad people.”

Me: “Last week, he couldn’t stop barking at an abandoned bike, so I won’t be too offended by your statement.”
