Forcing Them To Make A Curse-Correction

My friend/coworker is booking a hotel block, we are in the USA, and the wedding is on a tropical island nation, in a city popular with tourists and cruise ships. She is calling the hotel manager to set up a room reservation block.

Hotel Manager: “I am going to have to charge you [amount] per room and a surcharge.”

Friend: “What do you mean the room block needs a surcharge?”

Hotel Manager: “Sorry, this is policy. Nothing you can do.”

Friend: “Wait, what is your name again?”

She gets the name and hangs up; she runs off to make another call. After lunch, she calls the hotel back:

Hotel Manager: “Hi, okay, you will pay [amount], and if all rooms are filled, you get a discount.”

Friend: “Okay, all rooms will be filled. If we need more rooms, will you honor the deal?”

Hotel Manager: “Yes, yes, anything you need.”

Friend: “Okay, send me an email with this agreement and block number, and we will reserve it all. Bye, have a nice day.”

Me: “Hey [Friend], what happened?”

Friend: “I called my mama, who called his mama.”

Me: “What?”

Friend: “It’s a small island, I went to school with him, so my mama didn’t like him trying to scam us with a higher rate. So, she called his mama, and his mama was sooo mad she said she would put a voodoo curse on him if he scammed us!”

Me: “Really a curse?”

Friend: “Well, growing up in [Tropical Island], we were Christian, and don’t really believe in curses, but when a mama threatens a voodoo curse, we take no chances!”

We went to the wedding. It was great that the bride’s mother is a well-connected local, taking us to all the local restaurants, and everything for a great price. No voodoo curses required!
