Forceful With Their Understated Bigotry

, , , | Right | June 30, 2019

(I am working at a health insurance company and am finishing up answering a customer’s complex question. So far, the conversation has been pleasant and completely normal.)

Me: “Have I answered all your questions, Ms. [Customer]?”

Customer: “You have! You’ve been so helpful!” *pause* “Can I share something with you and do you promise not to say anything to anyone else?”

Me: *confused* “Um, sure, ma’am. What did you want to say?”

Customer: “I’m so glad I got to speak with a white woman! Not that I don’t like black women! But a lot of times when I call I speak with a black representative and they have such forceful voices and I don’t like it! So happy to speak with a white representative with such a sweet voice!”

Me: *muffling laughter* “Uh, well, I’m glad I could give you a good customer service experience! Have a wonderful day!”

(I’m half black.)
