A customer is buying some items when their kid grabs a magazine.
Customer’s Kid: “Dad! Can I get this?”
Customer: “What is it?”
Customer’s Kid: “It’s a space magazine.”
Customer: “Sure.”
He brings it over for me to scan. The cover of the magazine shows a star-filled image with the headline “The search for extra-terrestrial life ramps up.”
Customer: “Why are we putting so much effort into trying to find aliens?”
There’s a pause, and then I realize the customer is talking to me.
Me: “Oh! Well, I don’t know. I think it would be cool if we found some, though.”
Customer: “I don’t know why we should even try. It’s obvious that they’ll come to us before we go to them. They only have to come down; we have to go up.”
That’s… certainly a train of thought.
