Failed The Name Game, Part 14

, , , , | Right | April 27, 2026

I work the night shift at my office, which also includes fielding calls on our 24-hour help line. When we get a call from a number linked to an account, the account information pops up on the screen.

Caller: “I need help with the software.”

Me: “Can I verify your name?”

Caller: “I just want some help with the software. It’s not…”

The caller proceeds to go on an uninterruptible rant about their technical issue. I could help, but I need them to verify that they’re the account holder before I can do so.

Me: “Sir, I’ll be happy to help, but first I need you to verify your name for security details, as assisting you will require access to sensitive information.”

Caller: “Just tell me what I need to do to fix it!”

Me: “What you first need to do is verify your name.”

Caller: “I don’t want to do that.”

Me: “That’s fine, sir. If you don’t want to give me the required information in order to get you verified, then just call me back when you’re ready to provide it. Have a nice night.”

I hang up and get on with my other work. He calls back a few seconds later and seems surprised to get me again.

Me: “I’m the only one working here tonight, sir. Are you ready to verify your name?”

Caller: “I don’t want to do that! I just want some help with the software!”

Me: “As I explained, the fix you require involves sensitive information that I cannot provide on an unverified phone call.”

Caller: “But I don’t want to!”

I go into repetitive robot mode:

Me: “That’s fine, sir. If you don’t want to give me the required information in order to get you verified, then just call me back when you’re ready to provide it. Have a nice night.”

I hang up again, and he calls back again. I speak before he does.

Me: “Are you ready to verify your name?”

Caller: “I don’t want to!”

I hang up.

This repeats three more times before he finally gives me his name, and I get his issue fixed in under two minutes.

I can think of no reason why he would be so cagey about just SAYING HIS D*** NAME!
