Ethnicity And Nationality: Explained In Black And White
I’m a manager and have been called over to help a customer with a refund issue. As I am processing the refund:
Customer: “Why do you sound funny?”
Me: “Maybe it’s my accent? I’m from England originally.”
Customer: “But… how?”
Me: “How what?”
Customer: “You can’t be English! You’re Black!”
Me: “There are black British people the same way there are Black Americans.”
Customer: “We don’t have Black Americans! We have African Americans!”
Me: “Okay, then.” *Continues processing the refund.*
Customer: “So why are you pretending to be British?”
Me: “Sorry, ma’am, I can’t finish this refund. It will require the store manager to approve; let me call him over.”
The cashier who called me over spoke to me quietly.
Cashier: “Why are you calling over [Store Manager]? You can process her refund.”
Me: “I know, but [Store Manager] is White South African, and I really want to blow her mind.”
