Drive-Thru Is Not The Place For Colorful Exchanges

It’s late at night and I’m working in a fast food drive-thru, and we get a busy rush.

Me: *Politely* “Welcome to [Fast Food Restaurant]. Take a second to look over our menu and I’ll be right with you!”

Customer: “All right.”

I finish taking money from another customer and get back on the speaker.

Me: “Sorry about your wait! How may I help you?”

Customer: “It’s because I’m a black man, isn’t it?”

Me: *Very confused* “I’m sorry, sir, I don’t understand.”

Customer: “You only made me wait because I’m black.”

Me: “Sir, you’re in the drive-thru; I can’t even see what you look like. I was just finishing up with another customer. You may proceed with your order if you’d like.”

The customer starts yelling and cursing through the speaker in rage. The manager is listening in on another headset and decides to try to talk to the customer.

Manager: “Sir, sir…”

The customer is still yelling.

Manager: *Fed up* “Okay, you can either calm down and place your order, or we can’t give you our services.”

Customer: “I ain’t going anywhere.”

Long story short, he kept yelling and would not leave. We had a line wrapped around the building at this point. So, we eventually called the cops. The cops came and gave him the opportunity to either order food and leave calmly, or they would arrest him. He eventually got his burger and left. He was there for about thirty minutes total.
